Our EAL Bridge Programme offers intensive support for students who do not yet have the English language proficiency needed to successfully take part in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Selected students from grades 6-8 attend EAL Bridge classes for English, Math, Science, and I&S classes, while remaining with their homeroom class for PHE, Design, Vietnamese Language study and Arts.
All students are assessed for English language proficiency when enrolling at SNA and will be assigned to EAL Bridge if needed. Once they have demonstrated sufficiently improved English skills, they join all regular classes with their year group.
Students in EAL Bridge classes follow a similar curriculum to that studied by their peers, but with a greater focus on learning the specific language skills that they need to succeed academically. This includes learning key English terms, the basics of academic writing, and how to speak and present in class. They also practice many of the other skills that are essential to success in the MYP, including IT skills, inquiry-based learning, and academic honesty.
EAL Bridge classes are kept deliberately small, and students have access to full-time support from in-class assistants. Staff are trained and experienced EAL and MYP teachers, who ensure that students receive both the language support that they need and exposure to the concepts and content being taught in regular MYP classes.
